Hike on the Ausangate, another Apu -
Visit Vilcabamba, the last refuge of the Incas -
 

Introduction

View in the Peruvian AndesFor mountain lovers who wish to walk something different then the Inca Trail, we also offer hiking tours which do not visit Machu Picchu. Nevertheless they are spectacular in their own right. Do not miss out on the chance to explore with us the incredible possibilities the Andes has to offer.

Ausangate (7 days);

Vilcabamba (10 days).


Ausangate ( 7 days/ 6 nights)

Ausangate, also famous for the traditional pilgrimage of Q´oyoriti each year in early June, is the highest mountain in South Peru (6384 mts).

Program:

Day 1 

Cusco - Tinqui
A full day bus drive, stopping at some local, traditional markets.

Day 2 

Tinqui - Upis
After breakfast we start our hike, beginning at 3800 mts and camping at 4400 mts. Meanwhile enjoying herds of llamas and alpacas.

Ausangate

Day 3

Upis - Azulccocha
The first pass of the hike is at 4500 mts. Overlooked by the snow capped peak of Ausangate we hike to the campsite.

Day 4 

Azulccocha - Hacienda finaya
Physically a tough day with 2 passes to climb (5000 mts and 5200 mts).

Day 5 

Hacienda finaya - Comerccocha
Another pass (5000 mts) today, meanwhile however enjoying the surrounds of the natural Reserve of Huallatas.

Day 6 

Comerccocha - Phaqchanta
An easier half a day hike before reaching the campsite.

Day 7 

Phaqchanta - Tinqui - Cusco
A 3-hour walk before having lunch and traveling back to Cusco (by bus).

Vilcabamba (10 days / 9 nights)

Vilcabamba or Espiritu Pampa was the place were Manco Inca retreated after being defeated by the Spaniards at Ollantaytambo, until he was tracked down and murdered.

Although rediscovered in the sixties, the ruins never have been properly excavated and so still are overgrown.

Program:

Day 1 

Cusco - Quillabamba by bus

Hiking to Vilcabamba

Day 2 

Quillabamba - Huancacalle
We change transport so we can reach the campsite where arrieros (muleteers) are waiting with the horses.

Day 3

Huancacalle
After having breakfast we start to hike to Vitcos, the entrance to Expiritu Pampa. In the afternoon we visit the river with the possibility of fishing for those interested.

Day 4 

Huancacalle - Otuto
Beautiful views during today´s walk.

Day 5 

Otuto - Concevidayoc
Physically a tough day.

Day 6 

Concevidayoc - Espiritu Pampa
We are now in the cloudforest where you can feel the moisture and see the dense flora. In the afternoon we include a visit to the archaeological site of Espiritu Pampa.

Day 7 

Espiritu Pampa - Chihuaquiri
A short hike yesterday ... a longer one today.

Day 8

Chihuaquiri - Kiteni
Today we take a truck for transporting us to Kiteni.

Day 9

Kiteni - Quillabamba
We continue making our way back to Cusco by motor vehicle.

Day 10 

Quillabamba - Cusco
Back in town.
